Nationals 7, Mets 6 (12 innings): Ouch…

The New York Mets (31-25) were beaten by the Washington Nationals (31-22) by the score of 7 to 6 in 12 innings tonight in Washington D.C.

Tonight’s loss was absolutely terrible. That doesn’t mean there weren’t any positives to take out of the game. But, the negatives definitely outweigh the positives–especially with the final score of the game and innings played…

Anyway, Chris Young, who hasn’t pitched since May 1, 2011, made his 2012 debut and was great. His fasted pitch tonight hit 85 MPH, which is obviously insanely low. Young has always been a good fly ball pitcher, which he did tonight. Young threw five innings, allowing two earned runs (one unearned) on six hits, while walking one and striking out two.

Scott Hairston, yet again, his another homerun. Jordany Valdespin, coming off the bench, hit another pinch-hit homerun, also doubling in the game. However, what everyone will remember from today’s game from Valdespin were his two errors at shortstop in the 10th inning. Valdespin is a second baseman, not a shortstop, and Valdespin is only here because of injuries to Ruben Tejada, Ronny Cedeño, and Justin Turner–the three guys on the Opening Day roster who can play shortstop.

That’s not a knock on Jordany. I like him, but the guy can’t play shortstop.

Between the Valdespin’s two errors and an error by Ike Davis in the 10th, Bobb Parnell basically had to get every out of the inning on his own. That never works out well…

To be honest, this game was so bad, that as a fan it hurts to write about it.

All you need to know is: Young was great, Hairston was awesome, Jordany was good ofensively, but can’t play shortstop, and tonight’s game was the worst game the Mets have played defensively in a long time. Oh… and Bryce Harper ended the game with the first walk-off of his career–a single.
