Harvey’s curveball is ready, his fastball’s command has gotten significantly better in the last few months, and Dillon Gee will likely be out for the rest of the season because of his shoulder. The Mets also need some kind of spark to carry them to the 2012 postseason; so who is a better option than Matt Harvey? I mean, maybe if Alderson makes a deal for a good starting pitcher at the deadline the Mets could avoid testing Harvey out, but if no move is made for a starting pitcher, then the Mets should definitely call up the 23 year old right handed starter.
Matt Harvey has been his usual “stud-self” in Triple-A this season. He is 7-3 with a 3.39 ERA this season for the Buffalo Bisons (Mets Triple-A team). Even Wally Backman thinks he is ready for the challenge ”He’ll take a lump or two if they call him up,” Backman said by phone on Tuesday. “But his fastball command is much improved. He can help them.” Backman probably knows Harvey the best in the Mets organization, and like him, I also think Harvey could help the big league squad.
Collins even wants Harvey in the big leagues, however he said “under the right conditions”. Collins didn’t even rule out that Zack Wheeler could possibly break the big league roster in the next few weeks. There is probably a one percent chance that Alderson and the Mets organization let that happen, but it shows that the Mets want to be playing ball in October, and to do that, sometimes you have to draw your big guns even if your not completely comfortable doing it.
Collins stated before the All-Star game that Miguel Batista will be the current man to take Gee’s slot in the rotation. Batista is 1-2 with 4.20 ERA this season, however he is a veteran who has been in the game for a long time. The only other pitchers besides Harvey that the Mets could call up are, Jeremy Hefner or Chris Schwinden who both are incapable of having a low WHIP (Walks/Hits per innings).
I don’t know what all of you fans want, but I want to watch this team in October, and I think that if the Mets call a guy like Harvey up they’re taking a chance, but if Harvey can preform at the high level Backman and this organizations thinks he can, the Mets will have a huge spark plug out of that 5th slot in their rotation that could propel them to the next level.
